I picked this one because it is a symbol of the Oceans and can be seen from space, also it is so very important to the coast line inhabitants ,if it is lost ,it would be so profound that the entire Ocean systems would NEVER be the same ,they have found a sponge on a coral reef that was able to save a woman's life from a deadly cancer,so what else is there that could save more lives ??? It just MEANS SO MUCH TO SO MANY !!!!Thank you .....Lisa L. Straw-Howard

Coral is not something most people think of when global warming and climate change are mentioned, but those who know a bit about marine life understand how key it is. The damage being done to reefs due to climate change and human intervention have a ripple affect on the large percentage of other saltwater species that rely on reefs for survival.

Simply stated the reefs support untold life. It is why many countries have worked hard at building artificial reefs. Many of the creatures listed above are dependent in one way or another, at one time or another on reefs.

The bright green colour of the middle coral is singled out in the middle of a dull, mono-coloured surrounding which best represents the lost of the vibrant and exotic natural world and hence, represents the rareness and solemness of the remaining reefs. In addition, the school of fish in the background helps to give the sense of distance that is between our world and that of natures and the fact that their backs are facing us adds more to that.

Coral reefs are emblematic of the vulnerability of our marine environment. Coral reefs endangered by global warming, overfishing and nearby careless human development. Of equal importance, coral reefs are not only places of incomparable beauty, they are the nurseries for the fisheries that many developing countries are dependent on. If we let the reefs die, we also let many island and coastal cultures die, as well.

This image best represents a portrait of a vanishing world because when most people think of a habitat being in danger of disappearing, they think of the Artic since it is like the symbol of climate change. But when people think of the ocean in general? Well, most people visualize crystal clear water, soft white sand, and vibrantly colored fish and corals. What most people don't understand in my opinion is how much in danger coral reefs are, just as much as the Artic. The warming of the water is no better for the coral than it is for the ice.
