Following the Dye by Drone

This small drone helped scientists follow a trail of pink dye tracking water movement below the ocean surface in the Gulf of Mexico. Along with pre-placed underwater sensors, a helicopter, and a kite, the drone tracked the dye and helped to fill in gaps in our understanding of the ocean’s movement from below the surface. The scientists also used drifters that moved with the currents and waves, recordeding a GPS location every five minutes. Read more about the drifters in our article about the CARTHE project
