Giant Squid Caught on Camera

Edie Widder and Nathan Robinson

In 2019 an expedition funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) caught a giant squid on camera. The researchers were studying how creatures from the midnight zone were adapted to live in an environment void of light. Using a flashing probe they hoped to lure creatures to the camera. The appearance of the giant squid caused quite a stir on the ship, exciting even the most seasoned researchers. This video is only the second time a live giant squid has been filmed.
