Pacific Bluefin Tuna School

The Pacific bluefin tuna are one of three bluefin species, including the Atlantic bluefin (Thunnus thynnus) and the Southern bluefin (Thunnus maccoyii).  High fishing pressure on this bluefin is taking its toll—a 2016 report lists the current population at 2.6 percent pre-fished levels. Now an international agreement was put in place to increase the population up to 20 percent of the Pacific bluefin’s historic population by 2034.
