Emma Denes

A decade after watching a pair of Pacific gray whales migrating along the Southern California coast, Emma’s passion for all things oceanographic never wavered. An early-career ocean and environmental journalist based just outside Princeton, New Jersey, she is currently a graduate student in the virtual Master of Arts in Science Writing program at Johns Hopkins University. Earlier this year, Emma graduated a semester early from Marist University as Salutatorian of her class with a major in Communication, concentration in Journalism, and minor in Environmental Studies. While at Marist, she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Marist Circle student newspaper and as President of the Students Encouraging Environmental Dedication (SEED) club. A proud member of the National Association of Science Writers and the Society of Environmental Journalists, as well as a former communications intern for Marine Conservation Institute, Emma loves to tell stories through the written word that bring the oceanic and natural worlds to life. When not writing about the science of the sea, you can find her exploring the outdoors, reading narrative nonfiction, singing Broadway showtunes, or extolling the various virtues of her favorite species — Orcinus orca
