The Hairy Goosefish

“My wife excitedly flashed her torch at me to show me what we both thought was an egg-yolk jelly, which would have been a strange visitor to Hawaii in its own right. But as we looked closer, we saw what looked like fin rays, and then eyeballs. Sure enough, we were looking at a very unusual fish indeed. After bouncing the photos around various ichthyologists, we learned that it was Lophiodes fimbriatus or the hairy goosefish, a visually stunning animal that had only been seen a handful of times, and only in Japan and Indonesia.”- Jeffrey Milisen
