The whitemouth moray eel is one of the roughly 200 species of moray eels. Because of their size and shape, moray eels are often confused with sea serpents, mythical snakes that live in the ocean and often terrorize sailors in stories. Most moray eels will only bite divers when provoked or accidentally when they are hand fed, a practice that is now banned in the Great Barrier Reef.
