A bobtail squid expertly blends in with the light shining from the sea surface, but to do so, it needs a little help. This is where microbes come into play. A bacterium called Vibrio fischeri creates light via a chemical reaction, just like a firefly on a hot, summer's eve. Ed Yong explains further about this amazing symbiotic duo.
