Seeing Algae from Space

an algae bloom around Florida is documented by a satellite
NASA

In November 2004, scientists confirmed an algae bloom off the West Coast of Florida was a red tide. This is a satellite image of chlorophyll concentrations, an indication of algae growth. Although it cannot discriminate between the types of algae, the location of the red donut shape that juts out to sea at the southwestern tip of the state matches the location where the red tide was detected by scientists on the ground.
