Sooty Shearwaters (Ardenna grisea) are the migration kings of the ocean and cover both the Pacific and Atlantic basins as they travel around the globe. In the Atlantic, the birds can cover more than 12,000 miles in a year, traveling from their breeding colonies in the Antarctic up to their Arctic feeding grounds. Sooty shearwaters in the Pacific travel even further: they chase summer's warmth in a figure-eight pattern, from New Zealand to Japan to Alaska to California, covering more than a whopping 40,000 miles.
