Vaquitas were unknown to science until three skulls were found on a Mexican beach in 1950 – 1951. Scientists were not able to study the vaquita until a few were accidentally caught in gillnets in 1986. The vaquita was designated as Critically Endangered in 1990, but little else was known about its biology.
