Vaquita Refuge

Eliminating gillnets is key to protecting the vaquita from extinction. This map designates the vaquita’s range in blue, and includes protection zones that were established as refuges. The area within the red line is an established a biosphere nature reserve that was created in 1993. All commercial fishing was prohibited in the vaquita’s core range in 2005, which is designated by the white line. The blue dotted line is a gillnet-exclusion zone where Gillnets and night fishing were banned throughout the upper Gulf of California in 2017.
