Dredging Sand

A dredge from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can be seen removing a sandbar off of Virginia Beach, VA. This type of removal occurs in order to clean up the seafloor or to allow for large ships to navigate safely to a port. But where does the sand go? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its divers evaluate dredge disposal sites on a regular basis to make sure that ecosystems are are not overwhelmed by the deposits. Read more about the process.
