Choosing Sustainable Seafood

Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch will recommend which fish are "Best Choices" for sustainability, which are "Good Alternatives," and which ones you should "Avoid."

It can be hard to remember all the names of fish caught or farmed sustainably while you're at the supermarket. To help, the Monterey Bay Aquarium created its Seafood Watch guides, which come in the forms of paper pocket guides, a website, and smartphone apps. Depending on where you live in the US, Seafood Watch will recommend which fish are "Best Choices," which are "Good Alternatives," and which ones you should "Avoid." They make their designations based on scientific research and fishery experts. And their ultimate goal? To help sustain wild, diverse and healthy ocean ecosystems that will exist long into the future.

Download the guide for your region of the US, learn about sustainable sushi options, download a mobile app, or search for a particular type of seafood on the Seafood Watch website.
